1935-2023

Shirley A. Youst, 88, of Plymouth, Ind., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023 in St Joseph Medical Center of Mishawaka, Ind.

Shirley was born to Andrew and Anne (Tychonievich) Holtz on April 19, 1935 in Follansbee, W.Va. She married George S. Youst Aug. 14, 1957 and he preceded her in death Jan. 14, 1995. She graduated from East Liverpool High School in East Liverpool, Ohio. She went on to receive her Registered Nursing Degree from the East Liverpool Hospital Nursing Program, graduating in March of 1956. This was eventually followed up by receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Francis College of Joliet, Ill., in 1997. She worked as a nurse at Parkview Hospital of Plymouth, Ind., and an industrial nurse for McCord Corporation and Uniroyal Corporation, she then worked at Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart, Ind., until her retirement in 2007. She attended St. Michael Catholic Church. She was an avid sports fan, particularly of football and golf, and most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.

Cheering on her grandchildren, somewhat loudly at times, as they competed in all manner of events was always a highlight of any day. The family home on North Michigan Street was the “Blueberry Festival” jump off point for a multitude of friends and family for almost three decades. The annual Labor Day Parade was a major event that Shirley and George took great pride in, providing a fun and “food filling” day for all the invited guests as well as their brood of six kids’ “party crasher” guests! She also loved to write poems to commemorate special occasions in the lives of loved ones and friends. She felt it was the “proper” way to sign a card!

Shirley will be missed by her daughter, Helen Anne (Keith) Koga of Demotte, Ind.; her sons, Gregory (Mary) Youst of Leesburg, Va.; Jeffrey Youst of Plymouth, Ind.; Phillip (Vicki) Youst of LaPorte, Ind.; Paul Youst of Newnan, Ga.; and G. Scott Youst of Liverpool, N.Y.; her grandchildren, David (Courtney) Youst, Johnathon (Halee) Youst, Andrew Youst, Kyle Youst, Anthony (Rachel) Youst, Bryttin (Jeph) Greeson, Jordin Youst, Nathan Youst, Liana Youst, Katelyn (Matt) Schurman, Austin (Kate) Secor, Kyle Koga and Courtney (Dazzle) Koga; her 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Lou Holtz of Orlando, Fla.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Youst; her sister, Vicki Haggerty; and her grandson, Samuel Youst.
